Susan Torrey Merritt : An art lesson for children ages 8-12

Susan Torrey Merritt, a Weymouth resident, painted what is considered one of the best
folk artworks in the United States. She was born in 1826 in South Weymouth. Her painting,
Fourth of July Picnic at Weymouth Landing, also known as Anti-Slavery Picnic at
Weymouth Landing, depicts African-Americans enjoying fourth of July festivities along
with their white counterparts.
The original painting, is watercolor with decoupaged figures.

For the project, students will
paint a scenic background using watercolor paint. On a separate piece of paper, they will
draw people, picnic tables, and American flags. After the paint has dried, the drawings will
be cut and pasted onto the scene.

Space is limited. Registration is REQUIRED
